For generations, formal education operated around a relatively predictable model: students learned established content, were tested on their ability to remember it, earned qualifications, and were expected to transition into employment.
That traditional structure is increasingly being challenged — not because education has become less important, but because the environment it was created to serve has changed dramatically.
Artificial intelligence, increasingly flexible career paths, and worldwide economic and social uncertainty are all contributing to a fundamental rethink. Over the next two years, formal education is unlikely to disappear, but its priorities, assessment methods, and approach to preparing learners for the future will change significantly.
Five major trends are likely to shape this transformation.
1. Critical thinking will become more important than simply knowing content
When reliable information was difficult to obtain, memorizing facts and concepts served an important purpose. Today, information is available almost instantly, and artificial intelligence can generate answers to questions within seconds.
What is becoming increasingly valuable is the ability to exercise sound judgment.
People now have access to an enormous number of choices, resources, career routes, and digital tools. With so many possibilities available, success is increasingly determined not by whether someone can access information, but by whether they can make effective decisions and take appropriate action. Without strong critical-thinking abilities, individuals may be more likely to respond passively to circumstances, make poor decisions, or simply follow familiar paths without considering better alternatives.
As a result, formal education will increasingly focus on how learners use knowledge rather than simply how much information they can remember. Students will need to demonstrate their ability to formulate meaningful questions, assess competing options, recognize context, evaluate consequences, and make decisions when there is no obvious answer.
Critical thinking will no longer be viewed primarily as a supplementary soft skill. Instead, it will become an essential element of curriculum development and learning across different academic disciplines.

2. Practical, usable skills will become more valuable than simply finishing the syllabus
Completing every part of an academic syllabus does not necessarily mean that a student is capable of applying that knowledge outside the classroom.
Students and employers are increasingly asking a much more practical question: what is a graduate actually capable of doing?
This shift will place greater emphasis on skills that can be applied in real situations — including communication, problem-solving, structuring complex challenges, digital and data literacy, teamwork, and practical application.
Qualifications are also likely to become more flexible and focused on demonstrated outcomes. Projects, portfolios, practical assignments, and other forms of evidence may increasingly complement traditional measures of academic achievement.
The employment market is already moving toward skills-based recruitment, with employers placing greater importance on what candidates can demonstrate rather than relying solely on the qualifications listed on their resumes.

3. Assessment methods will evolve as Generative AI becomes part of learning
Generative AI has highlighted significant weaknesses in traditional approaches to student assessment.
When students can obtain answers by relying on artificial intelligence or simply reproducing memorized information, traditional examinations may fail to determine whether genuine understanding has taken place. The likely response will not simply be to prohibit AI, but to create assessment systems that recognize AI as part of the learning environment while placing greater emphasis on human reasoning and judgment.
Examples of this shift are already appearing. Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi (IIIT-D), for instance, recently introduced a pilot approach that permits students to use AI systems such as ChatGPT during examinations and assignments, provided they also submit the prompts used to produce their responses. Under this approach, assessment places greater weight on the quality of the prompts, reasoning, and analysis rather than relying primarily on a student’s ability to recall information.
Justin Pincar, Managing Director of Achievable, believes the growing presence of generative AI will force educators to reconsider what assessments are actually designed to measure. The logic being that when AI can handle much of the information retrieval and first-draft work, assessments need to place greater emphasis on what the student does with that information.
Pincar also expects assessment to become more closely connected to the learning process itself. “AI doesn’t have to make assessment less rigorous; it can make it more authentic,” he explains. “Students may increasingly be asked to document how they approached a problem, critique different solutions, defend their decisions, or improve an initial answer. That gives educators a much clearer picture of genuine understanding than simply checking whether a final response is correct.”
Assessment will increasingly incorporate case studies, practical problem-solving, live discussions, oral defenses, and portfolios. These approaches can provide stronger evidence of how students think, rather than simply what they can reproduce from memory.
The central question is therefore changing from “Did you produce this answer without assistance?” to “Can you demonstrate that you understand the answer well enough to explain it, apply it, defend your reasoning, and improve it?”

4. Education will increasingly prepare students for startups, freelancing, and the gig economy
The idea that a person will follow one predictable career path throughout their working life is becoming less realistic.
More professionals are expected to move between different projects, positions, organizations, and forms of employment. Some will work independently as freelancers or consultants, while others will establish businesses, develop side ventures, or combine several professional activities. Even employees in established organizations are likely to experience changing responsibilities and less rigid job boundaries.
Formal education will therefore need to focus increasingly on economic and professional adaptability, rather than preparing students only for conventional employment.
Students may receive greater exposure to areas such as identifying opportunities, understanding basic financial and business concepts, developing go-to-market strategies, negotiating, and establishing professional credibility.
Education will increasingly need to address a broader question than “Which organization will employ me?” It will also need to help students consider “What useful value can I create, and what can I do to make that value sustainable?”

5. Global citizenship will become a fundamental part of education — with sustainability closely connected
At its deepest level, education is not simply about preparing people to participate in the economy. It is also about teaching people how to live and work alongside others.
As communities and economies become increasingly interconnected and diverse, tolerance, inclusion, and respect for different perspectives are becoming practical necessities rather than merely theoretical principles. They are increasingly important for maintaining stability and supporting long-term development.
Educational systems that do not encourage these values can contribute to polarized thinking, overly competitive worldviews, and decisions focused only on immediate gains. In contrast, education systems that incorporate these principles can help learners understand different perspectives, cooperate with people who have different experiences, and balance personal goals with the wider needs of society.
This naturally connects education with sustainability.
Sustainability extends beyond environmental protection. It also involves developing the ability to consider the consequences of decisions beyond oneself, beyond a single business or market, and beyond the present generation. It requires an understanding of how human, social, economic, and environmental systems depend on one another.
Formal education will increasingly incorporate these concepts into discussions around technological development, economic growth, equity, power, social responsibility, and long-term impact. These ideas will not simply be presented as abstract principles, but as important conditions for maintaining and advancing human progress.

Education is not becoming irrelevant. Instead, the meaning of being “educated” is changing at a rapid pace.
